This is your raw marks percentage, not your JEE Main percentile. NTA calculates percentile separately for each session using a normalization formula, so two students with the same marks in different sessions can get different percentiles.
This threshold applies only to admission through JEE Main into NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutes (CFTIs). It is not required simply to sit for the JEE Main exam. Candidates who do not meet it directly can still qualify by ranking in the top 20 percentile of their own board. Every year, lakhs of students preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination search for a fast way to convert their marks into a percentage, and just as often confuse that percentage with their JEE Main percentile. The two numbers look similar, sound similar, and are often used interchangeably in conversation, but they answer different questions and are used at different stages of your admission journey. This calculator handles both the exam marks side and the Class 12 board eligibility side, and this guide explains what each number actually tells you, so you can read your own results correctly instead of relying on guesswork.
Your percentage is simply the marks you scored out of the total marks available for that paper, expressed out of a hundred. If JEE Main Paper 1 is out of 300 and you scored 210, your percentage is 70. It is a fixed, personal number. It does not change based on how anyone else performed, and it does not account for the fact that different sessions of JEE Main can have papers of slightly different difficulty. That is exactly why NTA does not use raw percentage to decide your rank or your eligibility for counseling. Instead, it converts your score into a percentile.
Percentile tells you where you stand relative to everyone else who appeared in your session. A percentile of 95 means you scored better than 95 percent of candidates in that particular sitting, regardless of your raw marks. Because JEE Main runs across multiple sessions and shifts, each with a different group of test takers and a different paper, NTA applies a normalization formula to make results comparable across sessions. This is why two students can score the same raw marks in different shifts and end up with different percentiles, and why a jump of a few marks near the top of the distribution can move your percentile by a noticeable margin while the same jump lower down barely moves it at all. If you are trying to estimate your rank or your chances in counseling, percentile and the official rank list are what matter, not the raw percentage this calculator gives you for your marks.
Separately from your JEE Main score, admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutes carries a Class 12 eligibility requirement. Candidates from the General, OBC-NCL and EWS categories need an aggregate of at least 75 percent in their best five Class 12 subjects, while candidates from SC, ST and PwD categories need at least 65 percent. If your board percentage falls short of this figure, you are not automatically out of the running. Being placed in the top 20 percentile of your own board's results in that year satisfies the same condition. This rule is checked at the counseling and seat allotment stage, not when you register for or sit the exam itself, so a lower Class 12 score will never stop you from attempting JEE Main. It can, however, affect which institutes you are eligible to join once you clear the exam, which is why it is worth checking early rather than after results are out.
Start with the JEE Main tab if you want to convert a mock test score, a previous attempt, or a projected score into a percentage you can track over time. Subject wise entry is optional, so you can use it either to see how Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics compare, or simply to check your total. Then use the Class 12 tab with your actual or expected board marks to see, in advance, whether you meet the 75 or 65 percent threshold for your category. Running both together gives you a clearer picture than either number alone. Your JEE Main percentage shows how your preparation is trending, and your board eligibility check tells you whether there is a separate, unrelated requirement you also need to keep in view.
Used this way, the calculator becomes less of a one time number generator and more of a quick check you can return to throughout the year, whether after a mock test, after your board pre boards, or once your actual JEE Main result is declared.
